3 Competitions; 8 Weeks: Freddie Sunderland

I’ve been lucky enough to have 3 major championships in the last 8 weeks, the RS Tera Nationals, RS Feva Summers and the RS Tera End of Seasons thanks to WPNSA and Draycote Water and picked up a Bronze Medal, a 3rd and a 4th place.

The Tera Nationals marked the end of my Tera Sport campaign. Being one of the more experienced Sports sailors I was hoping for some strong winds. However light winds prevailed and we only got 4 races in. I opened the racing by winning the first race, but couldn’t replicate that in the other races. Day 2 they attempted some races and I was winning the race that was subsequently abandoned. I placed 4th overall which was a great way to end my Sports Days.

The week after followed the Feva Summer Championships. My crew Stella and I hadn’t sailed together since Lockdown (March) due to Covid and also she had been back to her Finnish homeland over the summer. So we jumped in the deep end with this event, our first ever Feva event. Day 1, we picked up and OCS and had trouble launching our Kite. We had a re rig overnight and won the opening race on Day 2 and followed up with a day of top 10 results which placed us 12th overall. The Championship also was used for the RYA Regional Championships where we picked up a bronze medal.

My final event was the End of Season Championships. This was to be my first in the Tera Pro rig. Strong winds were forecast and the racing was reduced to a single day event as it was too windy on the Saturday to sail. The Pro rig is beautiful to sail with and I came away with a third overall despite exploding out of my boat on the final race in a huge gust.

I’ve been accepted into the RYA Feva Midlands Squad and will be training with them and the Tera Midland Squad also over the winter months. I think I will be needing all of my Neil Pryde layers. As the weather has cooled I have been wearing the Thermalite Top and Trousers and they have made a huge difference.
